Gurmit's View: F1tch Leaves Italy Moody

It currently appears that Melbourne will mark the first season opener since 1970 that there is not an Italian driver on the grid.

While some blame Ferrari, partly feeling that it accounts for most Italian interest in the sport, whilst at the same time failing to nurture home grown talent, others blame its fellow corporations for not supporting its up and coming talents.

However, it should not be forgotten that Italy is, like several of its southern European neighbours, going through a torrid time financially, indeed, along with Portugal, Spain and, of course, Greece, it comprises the so-called PIGS nations.

As Bernie Ecclestone will gladly tell you, contemporary Formula One has no room for sentimentality, therefore Italy's woe is Russia's joy, as Trulli's door closes, Petrov's opens... and then there's Tony, laughing all the way to the bank.
