Former F1 and ChampCar star Alessandro Zanardi has won the New York City marathon.

The Italian racer, whose career ended in a horrific accident at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz in 2001, yesterday won the handcycle division of the New York City event, just four years after making his debut in the same event.

A two-time ChampCar champion, Zanardi, who raced in F1 with Jordan, Minardi, Lotus and Williams, lost both his legs in the Lausitz event. However, such was his determination and bravery, he returned to racing enjoying five seasons in the WTCC, winning events in all but one season.

He took up handcycling in 2007, with the aim of representing Italy at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London. A winner of the 2009 Venice Marathon and 2010 Rome Marathon, Alessandro made his New York debut after just four weeks of training

An inspiration to us all. A real man and a true legend.
