Reports in the Thailand media suggest that the Southeast Asian Kingdom could be looking to host a round of the world championship.

A recent street demonstration by the Red Bull F1 team in Bangkok (above) attracted 150,000 spectators on to the streets of Bangkok, prompting the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to ponder following the example of Malaysia, Singapore, China, India, Japan and South Korea.

TCEB president Akapol Sorasuchart says the agency, in response to requests from local businesses, is seeking major events in order to boost the country's image and encourage tourism. (Now where have we heard that one before? - Ed)

Looking at the success of the Singapore event, Akapol believes a street race in Bangkok could be just the answer.

"Building an F1 circuit is very costly but it would be useful after the races end," he told the Bangkok Post. "I think that street racing is interesting for Thailand because it involves lower investment. A good location would be Ratchadamnoen Avenue because it has a good atmosphere."

Before, Akapol enters into any serious negotiations with you know who, he would be well advised to have a word with his counterpart in Turkey and ask how F1 boosted its image and attracted tourists.
