Former racing driver and team owner Tom Walkinshaw has died from cancer at the age of 64.

The Scot, who began his racing career in Formula Ford, moved up to F3 but following financial problems switched to Touring Cars, subsequently winning the 1974 British championship.

In 1976 he set up TWR which, in addition to its own racing programmes, provided engineering resources for other teams and manufacturers.

With TWR, the Scot enjoyed success both as an entrant and racer, however it was the company's winning partnership with Jaguar that many race fans will always remember.

In F1, he enjoyed spells with both Benetton and Ligier before buying in to the Arrows team. Sadly, the Leafield-based outfit ran out of money part way through the 2002 season.

His business empire in ruins, Walkinshaw switched his attention to V8 racing in Australia.
