The trial of former Ferrari technical manager Nigel Stepney has begun in Italy.

The Englishman was at the heart of the infamous Spygate saga which dominated the sport for much of 2007 and culminated in McLaren being excluded from that year's Constructors' Championship and fined $100m.

Ironically, the infamous saga first came to the public's attention following the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix, when "white powder" was found on the floor of the Ferrari garage, and on one of the team's car. It was subsequently claimed that the power was part of an act of sabotage by Stepney.

As the saga unfolded it was revealed that Stepney had passed information belonging to the Italian team to Mike Coughlan at McLaren.

The trial, which one Pitpass source has described as Stepney v Italy, is taking place in Sassuolo.
