Michael Schumacher has said that he could continue racing beyond his current three-year deal with Mercedes.

The 7-time champion who has come out of retirement after three years has signed a three-year deal with Mercedes following its purchase of the Brawn GP team.

However, while some are predicting that the German will retire again long before the termination of his current contract, Schumacher says the he may well stay on past his forty-third birthday in 2012.

"The good thing is that Mercedes believes in me and is giving me the chance for three years to have success," he told Bild. "But it does not mean it will end after three years." he added tantalizingly.

"I thought about everything very carefully," he continued. "Am I just spontaneously high or is my enthusiasm long-term? I have been excited for quite some time and can imagine doing this for a few years."

If the legendary German racer is as fit, hungry and competitive as he looks and sounds his words will strike fears into the hearts of his rivals not just for this year but for the foreseeable future.
