BMW has revealed that following the sale of its F1 team to Peter Sauber, Mario Theissen will remain with the German manufacturer as its motorsport director.

"He is staying with BMW," said a spokesman, according to Reuters. "He will not be involved with Sauber. After BMW announced they were pulling out it was left up to Mario to decide and he has said he will stay as motorsport director."

Theissen joined BMW in 1977, his first posting being in engine analysis. He subsequently moved to a managerial role before being appointed motorsport director in April 1999 alongside Gerhard Berger.

Since October 2003 Theissen, who has a doctorate in mechanical engineering and in 2005 acquired an honorary professorship, has been BMW's sole motorsport director.
