Speaking at a promotional event in Mumbai, driver turned TV pundit David Coulthard has said that Nelson Piquet should have been punished for his role in 'crashgate'.

The Brazilian, who deliberately crashed his car in Singapore during last year's Grand Prix, was granted immunity by the FIA in return for giving evidence against Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds, both of who subsequently received bans from the sport.

Speaking in India, however, Coulthard is adamant that Piquet also should have been punished.

"I think FIA should have punished Piquet too, he was equally guilty as any other." the Scot told the Times of India.

"It was really bad," he said of the incident, said by Pat Symonds to be Piquet's idea. "Bad for F1, bad for the fans. The revelations have shaken many, including me.

"I don't know how anyone can crash an F1 car," added Coulthard, who won 13 Grand Prix over a career covering 15 seasons. "All through my career I was trying to avoid a crash! I will be surprised if he gets an F1 drive again."
