Penalties galore in Japan

Championship rivals Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello both received five-place grid penalties for not lifting off during a yellow flag period in the wake Of Sebastien Buemi's crash in Q2 - a breach of the International Sporting Code Appendix H Article 2.4.5.1 (b). While Fernando Alonso and Adrian Sutil were given similar penalties for the same offence.

Buemi was also handed a five place grid penalty for driving back to the pits following his accident. The Toro Rosso driver was deemed to have impeded other cars following the accident and posed a potential hazard to the other cars with his damaged car - a breach of Articles 30.13 and 31.7 of the 2009 Formula One Sporting Regulations. The Swiss also received a reprimand from the stewards.

In addition to the five penalties, the grid faces a further reshuffle in terms of Mark Webber and Timo Glock, who will both start from the back of the grid as they will need to use new chassis, while Tonio Liuzzi and Heikki Kovalainen move back five-places after changing the gearboxes in their cars.
