We understand that after various checks, Rubens Barrichello's gearbox has been given the all clear, and that the Brazilian will not need to change it and thereby incur a five-place grid penalty.

There were fears, following yesterday's qualifying session, over the reliability of the gearbox in the Brazilian's car, which was first used in the Belgian GP. In the closing stages of the Spa event there was a fire at the back of the car and Brawn engineers have been concerned throughout the Monza weekend as to whether the unit would last the distance.

However, after overnight study of all the available data the team has opted not to change the unit.

Under 2009 rules gearboxes have to last a mandatory four races.
