In the wake of Martin Whitmarsh's wake up call to Heikki Kovalainen, Nico Rosberg has admitted that he is eyeing the second seat at McLaren alongside his good friend Lewis Hamilton.

Speaking to the Sun earlier this week, the McLaren boss admitted that Kovalainen hasn't lived up to expectations during his two seasons with McLaren, much as Flavio Briatore said of the Finn following his debut season with Renault.

"Heikki has not raced as well as he would have liked and we would have liked him to this year," said Whitmarsh, a comment that will be seized upon by those drivers without a drive for next season and looking to move further up the grid. Drivers like Robert Kubica and Rosberg.

"I have been team mate with Lewis before so that wouldn't be a problem," the German told reporters in Valencia. "It would be fine and very tough also... a combination, like sweet and sour

The youngster makes no secret that previously BMW had been on his list, however, the German team no longer remains an option.

"Yes, it's one clear option less, that's pretty obvious," he admitted, "but I am still very pleased with my situation. I have various good options and at the moment I am still figuring out what the best way to go is.

"I am close to having a clear picture of what the options are," he continued. "I'm still gathering a few bits and pieces.

I had a discussion with Williams last week to clarify what the situation is," he revealed. "I think sooner or later I'll be able to progress in a specific direction."

"I've been finishing fourth and fifth and I want to be finishing first and second and third, which is the next step. It's a very important step and I need to judge where I am going to get the highest chance of getting that."
