Renault has admitted that its 2009 contender, the R29, has failed the mandatory crash test.

The car is understood to have failed two of the mandatory tests, one being the nose test the other being the side impact test.

However, despite the set-back the French team insists that the car will be unveiled on January 19 in Portugal as planned.

"We have identified the problem and solved it," said a spokeswoman. "We will be able to run the car as planned in Portugal."

While some might perceive this as a set-back others may well see it as a good omen, in 2005 the R25 failed its side impact test but subsequently went on to win the World Championship in the hands of Fernando Alonso.
