Fuel burn qualifying phase to go

In another example of its much to be admired transparency, the FIA has revealed - seek hard and ye shall find - that the final phase of qualifying, which includes the so-called 'fuel burn' stage, whereby the cars run for over ten minutes doing just that, burning off fuel, is to be modified.

Given Max Mosley's quest for a greener F1, the fuel burn phase was always seen as a joke, an aspect of the sport that its critics quite rightly used as ammunition.

This season, the final phase will be shortened to just ten minutes (from twenty), beginning at 14.50, thereby allowing drivers to complete two, possibly three qualifying runs.
