Following the Italian motorsport federation's intervention in the ongoing espionage row, the Spanish version (REFA) has issued a statement giving its full support to Fernando Alonso following the qualifying incident which marred the Hungarian GP weekend

Deputy President of the RFEA, Joaquín Verdegay, who was in the headlines himself recently after predicting that McLaren would escape sanction when it appeared in front of the World Motor Sport Council, was in Hungary, and was kept informed of developments at all times.

A statement, released on Sunday, read:

"We wish publicly to make clear our total backing for, and absolute confidence in, Fernando Alonso, who has shown his professionalism and honesty throughout his brilliant career.

This Federation hopes these incidents do not happen again as they gravely harm the image of motor racing through its main representation: Formula 1"
