The stewards at the Hungarian Grand Prix are to investigate the incident involving McLaren drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton during the final phase of this afternoon's qualifying session.

The Spaniard, having been waved away by his mechanics, remained at his stand for at least ten more seconds while Hamilton waited behind him.

As a result of the delay the Englishman was unable to complete a final flying lap and therefore unable to challenge for pole position. Prior to the incident Hamilton held pole position but this was beaten by Alonso at his final attempt.

Earlier, Alonso was clearly agitated during his first pit stop when his crew held him for what appeared to be an inordinate amount of time. To add to the Spaniard's frustration when he was finally given the 'all clear' a tyre warmer appeared to be caught up in one of his wheels, thereby adding to his delay.

Announcing their decision to investigate the incident, the stewards have summoned team boss Ron Dennis and called details of the radio communications during the final stop.
