Contrary to what F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said earlier this week, FIA President Max Mosley has warned that should McLaren be found to be involved in any impropriety in the 'Stepney Saga' its could drivers could be penalized.
Much of the spying controversy has gone over the heads of a general public which is just beginning to (re)discover Formula One, courtesy of the exploits of McLaren's rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton.
However, the thought of his sensational debut season being compromised by a situation over which he would seemingly have no involvement, could cost the sport much credibility and many fans. Consequently, Ecclestone was quick to state that neither Hamilton or Fernando Alonso would lose points.
At the time, Pitpass said that the decision was not Ecclestone's to take and that in a worst case scenario if McLaren had benefited from the saga then so too had its drivers.
According to The Sunday Times, speaking at Silverstone yesterday, Mosley said: "I don't want to speculate on what might happen, but it is only in the most exceptional circumstances that a penalty for a team is different from a penalty for the driver."
The Englishman then added that under Formula One regulations, teams were responsible for the actions of their employees.
