Ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, the 2006 season opener, the FIA has made a last-minute change to the rules relating to the qualifying session... stop and you are out.

Literally hours before the season kicks off, the FIA has warned that following its rule 'tweak', any car which stops out on track will play no further part in the session, even if has posted a time good enough to guarantee it a place in the next round of the 'knock-out' procedure.

This applies to all cars, whether they stop on track with a mechanical issue or spin off.

According to the FIA, cars that stop on track will now be returned to parc ferme, and not returned to the teams.
