Rubens Barrichello's first lap clash with David Coulthard, resulting in an early visit to the pits for a new wing, and a subsequent tyre problem, meant that the Brazilian was unable to help wrap up the Constructors' Championship for Ferrari in Germany.
The Italian team needed to score just 13 points more than Renault, now they will have to wait three weeks until Hungary.
Barrichello's failure to get back into the points - he finished twelfth - ended a unique run. Until this weekend, the Brazilian had scored points in every round of the 2004 championship, the only driver to do so.
However, he remains the only driver to have completed all 775 race laps this season, a testament to the reliability of the F2004. Schumacher's only retirement remains the incident at Monaco.
