Good Afternoon, Vietnam

FEATURE BY MAX NOBLE
07/11/2018

Well dear reader here we are. Has F1 just had its "Jumped the Shark" moment, as Liberty go where the ever cunning Bernie would not?

That well known global motoring centre Vietnam is set for a street race in 2020. No doubt the fans there are just as long term as those in Malaysia (Proton did own a slice of Lotus for a time), India (Tata still owns Jaguar Land Rover), and South Korea (Hyundai still build ships).

That long and winding road that is a mix of nostalgia, true history, and the personal connection of screaming down a deserted back road, or indeed around a track on an amateur race or track day, tends to be missing from most Asian countries. Not to say that heritage cannot be built rapidly. Look at the rise, rise, and rise of the Japanese motoring industry over the last fifty years. Ah, yes, it did take fifty years. Indeed longer. Honda was incorporated in September 1948 (70 years ago), and Toyota in August 1937 (81 years ago). So maybe it took as long to grow nostalgia there as Europe.

So why Vietnam we all wonder? Well if you're visiting from a Western country it is a cheap destination. It is warm (some might venture too warm), and the locals tend to be happy helpful folk. The vast majority of whom do not own cars, or belong to motoring racing clubs, or collect 1960's Ferraris.

So why Vietnam, Liberty?

Possibly the local food, which is varied, exciting and tasty for the most part. I must however draw a personal line at Deep Fried Tarantula (seriously, go Google it) and stick with the less edgy (and less leggy - ed) spice-laden dishes.

I'm sure it is not because of the lingering memory of the last large-scale visit from Americans. Nor because of fancy nightclubs or casino gambling."

An emerging destination City? Well yes I guess this is true in so far as tourism is growing significantly across the entire region and Vietnam has a number of cities that remain unique and exotic, while having enough modern global influence to keep all us traveling softies in comfort. So why not?

Why not indeed? A lack of any significant heavy industry, any major motoring heritage, or a nation steeped in the history of Sunday drives to the coast and pub chat waffling about tread shuffle and wet weather braking distances.

Do we look to the past to shape the future, or ignore the past and re-image the future? The Now is a remarkable balance point between nostalgia and past lessons, and future yet to be realised. It should not be squandered on the vanity driven chase of money and power. And yet that appears to be what so many corporations chase these days. The Pyramids, the Colosseum, heck, even the Eiffel Tower, were not built with an obsessive view to budget caps, and fleecing punters as fast as possible as soon as possible.

If Liberty wants to build a resounding future-history where drivers, team owners, and fans all look back with pride on decades well lived, this short term money grab needs to stop.

Pay walls hiding the sport, a lack of major series sponsors (other than Heineken), sour deals with existing circuit owners, McLaren running with minimalist clean paint surfaces due to a lack of a headline big money sponsor. And Liberty's response? Start an argument with the residents of Miami, and plan a new street circuit race in Vietnam.

In other news both Porsche and Lamborghini have now confirmed they will not be entering F1 as manufacturers any time soon. So shovel in hand Jean Todt has been out on the pitch before daylight moving the goal posts, and saying that keeping the current manufacturers involved in the series is a major goal and can be considered a blinding success. Thank the Lord Jean is so handy with the shovel, because I think he will be moving the goal posts a few more times before 2021.

What, dear reader, is a fan to think? Have I been searching in desperation for a new Destination City? I mean, if one checks the dictionary I believe one finds (even in an American English dictionary) that a ‘destination' is anywhere one sets out for. Destination Upstairs. Destination Kitchen, Destination Local Pub... Possibly the idea is so exciting for Liberty because they do not have any idea where they are going.

"Run!" Shouts Chase, "Which way!?" Scream back his staff. "Doesn't matter, just run!" Replies Chase. And so another Monday in the Liberty F1 offices gets underway.

So now these poor lambs have a Destination City! Praise be! For a few months they now know where they are running to. Once they eventually assemble breathless at the Vietnamese start line, Chase can once more extort them to "Run!", and they can beg clear direction of their Master with a fraction more clarity by now replying, "Which Destination City Chase!?", to which he will reply "Well not this one guys, come on, work with me and RUN!"

Even with all this running in circles, or along wobbling lines to Destination Cities, Liberty is still barrelling into the future at the rate of one day every 24 hours just like the rest of us.

And one Sunny afternoon in the not too distant future, Chase will step into the warming Vietnamese Sunlight, and pronounce "Good Afternoon, Vietnam!" Meanwhile one can only hope that Marty and the Doctor head back to 1885, and rework the F1 rules from the ground up. Only by going that far backward might they generate the space for Jean to have the time he needs to move all those goal posts back to where they really need to be to keep the fans happy and give us back the future.

...and that's more than enough mixed-metaphors and film references for one paragraph from me. I think I'm off to find Destination Darkened Room, for a quiet lay down and rest, as I recall some of the sweet overtakes from this past season, and forget all the rest.

"I guess Liberty's Vietnam "glamour" will consist of us seeing Francis Ford Coppola and Robert Duval doing the starting grid walk of the rich and famous! They could even have them arrive by helicopter... an olive painted and dusty Bell UH-1 Huey would fit perfectly for the scene!"

"@Canuck, @Spindoctor - indeed! It will be interesting to see how many Europeans and Americans make the trek to Vietnam. But as you also point out... how many locals? Those of us who have been watching long enough have already seen Turkey, India, and South Korea come and go. Malaysia has kept MotoGP while dumping F1. The two ringing successes have been Circuit of the Americas and Singapore. One is a masterclass in how to build a new bespoke circuit that fans and driver love, and the other is an iconic night race in a unique city that is an airline hub for half the planet. Long May they remain on the calander!

Don’t worry... I think Chase has a plan... :-). "

"I talked about this new circuit with a friend who has spend a lot of time in Vietnam. He knows the area of the proposed circuit in Hanoi very well. He claim the Vietnamese will be proud to host such an event - but very few will be able to afford a ticket. However he claims that the many side streets than touch upon the circuit we be very difficult to block, thus providing the locals ideal free access to view the race. Therefore the promoters will be greatly dependent on foreigners buying tickets and staying in local accommodations. If we look at any of the current Asian circuits, what is the percentage of foreigners buying tickets? Is that why India, Turkey, Korea and others have failed? China is willing to pay the entrance fee and provide free tickets to groups in hope of having a partial audience in the stands. But who else is willing to do this. Good luck liberty.

I have also stated before that maybe some countries would be best to host races every second year, thereby seeing the possibility of continuing to host. That way we could stick with 21 or 22 races but 25 - 27 destinations."

"@Trixi - Tough luck mate! Your nemesis won again (thanks Maxie).

Vietnam is, to maintain the movie theme, a Bridge too Far....
I don't know what Liberty will be paid by the Vietnam Government for the dubious privilege of running a GP, but however much it is, it's too much! Unlike various Arab despots, Vietnam (Like India & Turkey) won't have the cash, nor the desire to fund a vanity project with few local spectators for many years.

The reason why all the 'old' circuits are beloved is precisely because they usually have character and\or history.
The former is easier to (re)create: Some straights, some corners, and braking areas where DRS notwithstanding; good, clever drivers can bemuse, befuddle and out-brake their opponents and pass. On spec the Vietnam track lacks this attribute.
'History' is an intangible, but I doubt that anything resembling the passion of the tifosi in Italy, nor the dogged enthusiasm of the damp Brits at Silverstone will be engendered by the new track.
I appreciate that this is a chicken\egg dilemma - the poor old Vietnamese have barely recovered from years of warfare and deprivation. I wouldn't necessarily expect them to care that much about which over-privileged European wins a race which closes their city centre for a fortnight. Maybe, in (say) 10 or 20 years time they'll feel differently, but the race will have fallen off the calendar by then.....

If Liberty were serious about F1 in the developing world, they'd start, as F1 did in Europe: enable FTA access to the Sport for at least a decade. Not just on on TV, but on Tablets & 'phones (especially 'phones) too, and make sure the Broadcasters promote it to death.
When I were a young lad I could watch free F1 on monochrome TV, and that instilled a lifelong enthusiasm, to the extent that I might actually pay (NOT Murdoch) to watch it in future. Think on't Liberty.

"@Max Noble Talking of the movie aspect. I am for once actually glad the late, great Robin Williams has passed on as he would surely have been dragged out by Liberty to scream the catchphrase of that movie every 30 seconds on the loudspeakers at the race. Saying that, I wouldn't put it past them to use a recording!!"

"Hamilton says NO to 25 races; so let's hurry and put 25 on the schedule, please. Hanoi, Miami, NYC, Vegas (baby)...come on. I know, it's another article; but, I did mention Hanoi. And, I see a lot of moaning comments here; so I'm just adding to it. The whinging is probably from a lot of Brits...so we need to keep Silverstone, too.
Whatever. You all bitched over Bernie; and now over Liberty. The way I see it...you people will never be happy. I'm basically happy...when it's "anybody but Hamilton." THERE, I said it. OK, here comes Brazil. My same mantra as above. Let's do this! "

"@TokyoAussie - LOL! I recommend team mates pull each other in the rickshaws with the team mate who finished ahead being in the rickshaw. Ricciardo would be sick of pulling Max by now and his pre-rickshaw race interviews would be priceless!

@imejl99 - Sweet intellectual work! Please write your idea on the side of a passing unicorn and tell it to trotover to Chase’s place immediately! You’ll be on a $10M retainer before you can say “Sweet Street Circuit!”

...see... not evening racing in Hanoi yet and we’re having fun...! On Ya’ Liberty!"

"Remember Wall (or Well) of Death, motordrome, a carnival sideshow? Maybe they can make that roundabout start from the straight to oval turning into wall of death going back to oval back to straight? There is enough downforce in F1 car to achieve this. Grandstands on the inside, super vip gold platinum unobtainium ticket @100K.

Regard this comment as evidence that I am qualified for job at Liberty."

"There's another story posted about the British G.P. While we're amused by the Hanoi plans, we need to wonder how much effort Liberty is putting into a British venue; you know the place - where most of the teams operate, where there exists an auto heritage and an auto racing heritage. Anyway, as far as Vietnam is concerned I find myself really not caring. Another street circuit and another country where auto racing doesn't matter. "
