Biography

Andy has dual nationality, for whilst born in Spain, his father is Austrian. However, he races under a Spanish licence because, quite simply, Andy "feels Spanish".

Following the inevitable apprenticeship in Karting, Andy made his single-seater debut in 2001 in the Portuguese Formula Ford Championship. For 2002 he moved to the Spanish F3 series - winning the junior championship - whilst also continuing with Karting commitments.

In 2003, he contested the Spanish F3 championship with EV, continuing in the series, with the same team, in 2004, though he also made two appearances for GTA.

In 2005, Andy finally won the Spanish series with three wins and seven podium finishes, moving up to the World Series by Renault in 2006. While there was only one win, the Spanish youngster finished the season fourth overall and capped a great year by testing for the Toyota F1 team.

2007 saw him move up to GP2, where he drove for DPR, and although there were two podium finishes, Andy could only manage sixteenth overall.

He began 2008 with the GP2 Asia Series, however, he was dropped after the first race by DPR having signed to race in the main series with FMS International. However, days before the main GP2 series was due to get underway, Andy was dropped by FMS in favour of fellow-Spaniard Roldan Rodriguez, a situation that was later decided in the law courts.

They say that one man's misfortune is another man's good luck, and in some ways that was the case shortly after Andy's dumping by FMS. Faced with no drive, the Spaniard was called up by Super Nova following Christian Bakkerud's crash in the opening race of the season which caused a reoccurrence of the back problem that had blighted his 2007 season.

After a couple of outings with Super Nova, Andy returned to DPR where he replaced Giacomo Ricci. However, a couple of races later he was called back by Super Nova to replace Bakkerud for the remainder of the season. One podium finish and one fastest lap contributed to the youngster ending the season fourteenth in the overall standings.

Andy also found time in 2008 for the new Superleague series, the Spaniard replacing Antonio Pizzonia - who was busy elsewhere - in the Brazilian team Corinthians. Once Pizzonia returned to Superleague, Andy signed for Athletico Madrid, driving the Spanish team's car for the remainder of the season and helping the legendary football club to ninth overall.

For 2009, Andy took the brave decision to turn his back on GP2 and take his chances in the newly revived F2 championship. With seven wins, eleven podium finishes, two pole positions and three fastest laps, the Spaniard took the title with three races remaining.

As part of his prize for winning the F2 title, Andy got his second outing in an F1 car, this time at the wheel of a Williams. The outing, on December 1 at Jerez, saw the Spaniard top the timesheets, finishing ahead of drivers such as Paul di Resta, Gary Paffett and Mike Conway.

Convinced he had secured a test role with Williams, Andy was surprised when the Grove outfit picked Finland's Valtteri Bottas. However, weeks later, the Spaniard once again benefited as a result of someone else's misfortune, being handed the role of test driver with Virgin Racing after Alvaro Parente's sponsorship deal with the Tourism Institute of Portugal fell through.

However, in August 2010, Andy announced that he had left Virgin, claiming the team had broken its contract with him by not giving him any testing mileage.

Other than a couple of days in a 2006 Super Aguri - as part of an FV10 'driver experience' programme - Andy's only other racing in 2010 was a couple of outings in the Superleague Formula racing for Galatasaray.

For this particular young driver, F2 was clearly not the stepping stone to F1 he had hoped for.
