Circuit History

Jerez de la Frontera Built in the thinly-populated sherry-producing region of the southern plains of Spain, the 2.621-mile Jerez circuit opened in 1986 and, that year, took Spain back into the World Championship.

It was fairly highly regarded, having an interesting mix of corners, but after Martin Donnolly crashed his Lotus during practice for the 1990 Spanish GP, it was dropped from the calendar. Over the winter of 1992-3, the circuit was eased by the elimination of a twisty section (Curva Ducados) in favour of a fast right-hander (Curva Sito Pons) and, by the time that the circuit again hosted a Grand Prix (the European GP) in 1994, a chicane had been added at the place where Donnolly crashed. A lap then stood at 2.751 miles.

Facilities at Jerez were excellent, but it was too far from major cities to attract more than tiny crowds. It did, however, host both rounds of the World Sportscar Championship and the European Formula 3000 Championship.
