Mick Schumacher is to contest the opening rounds of both the German and Italian F4 championships.

The German, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, will contest the first race of the Italian series in Misano this weekend, then the opening round of the German series at Oschersleben a week later.

According to his manager, Sabine Kehm, he will drive in both championships in the beginning of the season, taking advantage of the ability to gain experience. He will then, at a not yet defined stage of the season, decide if he will continue in both championships or concentrate on one.

In February it was confirmed that Mick had signed to the Prema Powerteam, having scored a win, a third place and several top ten finishes in the 2015 championship.

"I am proud to welcome Mick Schumacher to our team," said Prema team principal, Angelo Rosin. "As a driver, he is showcasing a constantly-improving potential and he already has a one-year experience in Formula 4. At his maiden season in single seaters, he quickly showed he has all what it takes to aim for the top.

Prema enjoys close links with Ferrari, though it is understood talk of Schumacher becoming part of the Maranello outfit's driver academy is somewhat premature.

However, a promotional video released by his team and featuring teammates Juri Vips and Juan Manuel Correa brings back memories of his father, alongside Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger in the early 90s when they drove for the Sauber Mercedes Sportscar team.
