2016 race schedule under threat?

Bernie Ecclestone's plans for a 21-race schedule in 2016 - the largest in the history of the sport - could be scuppered unless teams agree.

Article 54 of the Sporting Regulations (pdf) published today states: "The maximum number of Events in the Championship is 20, the minimum is 8".

Next year, in addition to German's return to the schedule, sees F1 head to Azerbaijan which will host the Grand Prix of Europe.

Of course, Ecclestone may still get his way, but any changes to the regulations can only be made "with the unanimous agreement of all competitors entered in the 2016 championship, save for changes made by the FIA for safety reasons".

Whilst it is rare for the teams to agree on anything, they realise that more races means more prize money and are therefore likely to approve the original 21-event schedule.

The final calendar will be issued in December.
