Spanish media reports that Fernando Alonso has passed initial tests ahead of race return.

Spanish newspapers Marca and AS both quote sources close to the two-time champion who claim that he passed a number of tests at the University of Cambridge today including checks on his short and long-term memory as well as reflexes.

Whilst it's good news for the Spaniard, McLaren and his many fans, there are still hurdles to be crossed.

On Thursday, he will be examined by the circuit's chief medical officer following which Jean-Charles Piette, the FIA's medical delegate, will put him through the governing body's impact test which analyses his suitability to participate in the race by comparing his reactions and cognitive skills with his previous test results.

The accident last month in Barcelona, during which he was concussed, remains shrouded in mystery, with the FIA carrying out its own investigation into the circumstances surrounding it.
