Mick Schumacher, son of legendary 7-time world champion Michael, is to race in Formula 4 this season.

The 15-year-old, who finished runner-up in the German Junior Kart Championship last year, as well as in the European and World Championships, subsequently tested the Jenzer Motorsport F4 car however, his deal sees him racing for Van Amersfoort Racing.

"It is a tradition for us to have the runner-up of the German carting championship over and offer them a test at our simulator," said team owner Frits van Amersfoort. "He spent a full day at the simulator at our headquarters in the Netherlands, then we saw him during a test session at Valencia and, eventually, we agreed to compete together in this year's ADAC Formula 4 series."

Starting his karting career in 2008, Schumacher raced under the name Mick Betsch - Betsch being his mother Corinna's maiden name - in an attempt to avoid the inevitable media circus racing under his real name would attract.

In 2011 and 2012 he drove in the KF3 class of the ADAC Kart Masters, ending up 9th and 7th respectively. In the Euro Wintercup of the KF3 class he was 3rd in 2011 and 2012 and in 2012 was 3rd in the KF3 Rating DMV Kart Championship. In 2013 he finished 3rd in the German Junior Kart Championship, and the CIK-FIA Super Cup KF juniors.

His father is still in rehabilitation following his horrendous skiing accident in December 2013.
