The FIA is to ban 'outboard' mirrors from later this month following a number of controversial incidents in the first two races of the season.

Rather than being placed in the traditional location, 'outboard' mirrors are fixed to the sidepods of the cars in what is clearly an attempt to find further downforce. However, following a number of alarming incidents the FIA is to act and will ban the devices from the Chinese Grand Prix.

Not all of the teams have opted to go down the onboard route, however, Red Bull, Ferrari, Sauber, Williams, Force India and Hispania have.

In Australia, former Grand Prix Drivers' Association chairman Pedro de la Rosa was involved in a couple of nasty incidents, resulting in an official reprimand from the Race Stewards, the Spaniard subsequently admitting that he could not see fast cars approaching him in his mirrors, a combination of their location and the obvious vibration.
