In his interview with Kevin Eason for The Times, Bernie Ecclestone says that Formula One doesn't need the USA, and makes a number of claims in order to support his opinion, writes Christian Sylt.

"The television has never taken off," says Ecclestone, "we have more viewers in Malta than over there."

It appears to that Bernie may well be contradicting himself here. According to the CIA's website which records data for countries, Malta has a population of 400,214.

In contrast, The 2005 Formula One Global Broadcast Report states that the US had 10.66 million total individual viewers in 2005 with the highest individual race audience being 3.303 million for the Spanish GP.
