In a twist to the traditional motor racing format, nominated A1 GP drivers who did not participate in the qualifying session can still race if they have posted an official practice time within 102% of their team mate's fastest qualifying time.

Under this rule, Team Malaysia has selected Fairuz Fauzy to drive its car in the Sprint race and Alex Yoong to contest the Feature race in order that both nominated national drivers capitalize on accumulating race mileage in the inaugural round.

Justifying the decision ahead of today's Sprint race, team boss, Alex Yoong told Pitpass: "It's great to be a team with drivers who are within 102% of each other as this helps greatly in car set-up feedback.

"A1 Team Malaysia's decision to have Fairuz drive the Sprint race and I the Feature race actually makes a lot of sense. You want both the drivers to benefit from invaluable race mileage right from the word go.

"A1 Team Malaysia is all about Malaysia," he added, "the team and drivers are secondary... so, we have to get both nominated drivers up to race speed as early as possible."
