I look forward to movies that cover the topic of motorsport even with a Hollywood angle.
The original Grand Prix starring James Garner and LeMans starring Steve McQueen were both interesting in their way but had convoluted and rather boring story lines.
Weekend of a Champion was a well done documentary of Jackie Stewart at Monaco but once again limited in what it could show the viewer.
The racing scenes were well done with the camera's and equipment of the day.
Today with digital moviemaking now become the norm, we will be seeing events that regular 35mm camera's just could not capture. All you have to do is watch F1 now and see the images streaming from the cars on those lipstick camera's they have all over the cars to get an hint of what a movie may be able to show.
Ron Howard is a fine filmmaker and I believe he will be factual in his coverage of F1. But it being a Hollywood movie and will have a mandate to appeal to US audiences and make money, it will not make every European F1 fan happy. The tastes and knowledge of F1 is very different between North American and Worldwide audiences. The USA is very firmly used to NASCAR and just does not understand F1 racing very well.
Hopefully Ron Howard's movie will broaden that audience to include more Americans.
F1 badly needs to appeal to more fans and have them show up at the races as that is that only way tracks can continue to keep their doors open and pay Bernie the wads of cash he demands to bring the F1 circus to town. |
