There have been many calls to increase in season test sessions but I think we are forgetting that Friday Practice is supposed to be those test sessions.
Teams however are using that time not to develop the car but to get used to the tyres and learn the track.
I propose that a change to the tyres would solve this.
Have Pirelli develop a test tyre. It should be super hard and not to be used at any Grand Prix. Teams could be given unlimited sets of these tyres so they can run as much as possible. As they would be very hard, wear rates would be low and performance levels would not be relative to the tyres that would be available on Saturday and Sunday. I believe this would shift the teams focus to development of the car.
In addition I would break the day up into 3 x 60 minute sessions. The first session would be for test or rookie drivers only giving them opportunity to learn driving F1 cars. Teams should also be given a different allocation of engines and gearboxes for Friday so no action would be lost for the fans as teams would not have to protect engine life. _________________ Regards

I'm not sure how useful testing on a tyre that they'll never use competitively would be, but that is just my ignorant, uninformed conjecture.
I like your idea for friday practice though. |

The problem with this is that the development of the car is greatly influenced by the tyres. I wonder how much meaningfull work could be done if the tyres used during testing were radically different from the tyres used during the rest of the season? _________________ Movable body panels - welcome to the Wacky Races |

Is it? It's only really become the case since in-season testing was abolished. I mean, before that, they really did just use that time to practice...

...yeah, that sounds about right for a practice session.
I don't necessarily disagree about finding ways to get the teams to do more running/testing/stuff on a Friday, but I think you're painting a slightly weird picture of things. _________________ Life is.....the gap between Formula 1 Grands Prix |

The teams already use engines and gearboxes that have fulfilled their racing life on Fridays. |

The teams want more test days. Give it to them I say. That is, Thursdays on GP weekends, the way it used to be, back when it felt like you were perhaps getting your money's worth in a race ticket.
All the team personnel, marshals, and medical staff is in place, so it would be much cheaper than having dedicated test days (and dedicated test teams). Whatever test engines that may have been allocated, let the teams have them on Thursdays and Fridays.
It would be too simple. |

I would suggest the Monday after the race so the focus is really only
testing. I am afraid that on a Thursday the teams would still test for
the race only. In MotoGP they have testing days after the race weekend. _________________ another kraut in kanada |

| Much of the problem these days is that because there more races there is more travel, keeping staff away from home for long periods. There are also some tight schedules in terms of transporting and preparing cars, so alas it is not that simple. |

At the British GP the Marshals arrive during the day and evening on the Thursday ready to be on post Fri am. There is only a few Marshals each year that turn up earlier on the Thurs or weds evening that Flag for Medical and Safety car high sped tests that happen Thurs lunchtime. |

That is because there is no running on Thursday, currently. When there was, they were there. Ditto all other venues. |
