This will of course be a subject of some discussion. Will just get it started, here.

Announcers said Ferrari was ready for their magnificent charge to get a wing change - and wondered if perhaps Alonso decided on his own to remain out one more. Mr. Machette pointed out that every contract he ever knew of stated a driver must obey a team's orders absolutely.

Very Happy

Whoever made the decision was a total idiot, anyway.

That is how it appears, Podge 90. Well-said.

Even one of the smallest teams in F1, past and present, would never have made the call to keep him out, total incompetence on Ferrari's part.

I wonder if the local TV retailer is lining up to deliver a new telly to Luca's house in the morning...

Undoubtedly a massive error on Ferrari’s and to a lesser extent Alonso's parts.

There's no excuse for the team not having seen and being able to work out what would happen and although the drivers vision of that area would have been virtually nil, I would hazard a guess that one of his quality must have known that all was not well.

As a result, either one of them should have made a call to pit.

At such an early stage of the season, it probably isn’t championship defining but it’s certainly not helpful.

Yes it was, but I can understand why they gambled.

If Alonso had stopped on lap 1 he would have had to put inters back on the car, rejoin last and then pit for new slicks on lap 5. He would have spent the race trying to claw back through the field an possibly could have scored a point or two. If they could have survived for 2-3 laps with the broken wing, they could have put slicks on the car a lap or so earlier than ideal, not have had to pit again and be in the mix for a top 5 finish.

The gamble didn't pay off and they looked quite stupid.

And in his 200th GP, not a good way to celebrate. Smile
