When I were a lad I lived near the Tyrrell works. In early '73 I wrote to them and asked if I could have a look round the factory which I did one Saturday morning with, Neil Davis, the works manager. In the workshop which was a long wooden hut they were building 006/2 and I took a couple of shots of it.

About a month before the British GP that year I wrote to them again explaining that I had seen 006 in bits back in March and wondering if it would be possible to get some close up shots at Silverstone. I was thinking of the possibility of Tamiya bring out a 1:12 scale kit at the end of the year.

Anyway I got a letter back from Uncle Ken saying that I was most welcome to take some pictures, 'just make yourself known to me and I will show you round the car'. That is exactly what happened on race morning! Can you imagine Ron Dennis being so welcoming

Most unfair of you to single out Ron Dennis or McLaren.

I also think comparing those days to now is wide of the mark as well. I would think that it was a whole lot easier to do that back then.

It fun and interesting. You could actually look at the cars in close up and meet the drivers. During the pits walkabout they would come out to the front of the garages talk to the public, ultimatly the paymasters, and sign autographs

You could say that about any sport, not just F1.

Aye, remember days when players used to get on tram down to ground with boots in brown bag Wink

Just noticed this thread and I hope it's not too late to pop in a contribution. During the nasty goings on of 2007 I formed the view that many in and around the sport were taking unjustifiably nasty personal snipes at Ron Dennis. I wrote a (snail mail) letter of support to him. In short order I received a personal letter expressing gratitude in an envelope hand addressed in the same handwriting as the signature. Quite impressed with that I was!

Gary, the cynic in me thinks Ron was able to personally write to you rests on the fact he probably only received one or two letters of support Wink

However, all cynicism aside, I am impressed you received a response to your letter. One of the many things I love about Pitpass, you write to our Editor - he replies!

Saw an article ages ago in a Scottish paper about group of men going to a European race in 2008 to support DC. Someone's girlfriend wrote to Red Bull asking if they could meet him. They ended up as fully-fledged guests with a tour, hats etc.

If you don't ask, you'll never get.

Yes, a little Chutzpah can go a long way.

I was wondering, who among any of the teams' principles might be so welcoming? These days, in the end, are vastly different from those in the past. Yet, as has been mentioned, the human element ultimately determines the matter. David Coulthard's a millionaire who nonetheless on a busy race weekend reasoned it wouldn't hurt to show some fans true-enough to write and ask a good time. The individual will thus determine the outcome more than the times.

In my experience, having been lucky enough to meet a few drivers and commentators over the course of race weekends and so on, most of them are very accommodating provided that you show them a bit of courtesy.

The only exception to that I can really recall was a German driver, whose brother still races in F1.

Poor Ralphie, he hasn't been in F1 for quite a while and still manages to rub people the wrong way - the lad is certainly gifted Very Happy

Even though it was a few years ago, I've never forgiven him for it.
