Assuming that MS does *not* retire, if JV does not get a seat for 2007, that means the season will start with but two world champions or former champions on the grid. If JV fails to land a drive, *and* MS retires, the season will start with but one driver who has won the world championship: FA.
Has there ever been a similar scenario, excepting the first few years of the postwar championship? |

In 1999 there were three former champions and the reigning champ - Schumacher, Villeneuve, Hill, and Hakkinen. In 2001 there were two former chamions (JV, and Hakkinen) and the reigning champ (Schumacher).
For most of 2004 Schumacher was the only champion in the field, as he was for 1995 (except when Nige did his two races). For 1996 he was the only champion.
For large amounts of 1994 there was no champion in the field. |

| Hmmm...maybe not as noteworthy a situation as I had thought! |
