The oldsters among you will remember him - most famous for nearly causing an upset during the 1967 SA GP, by damn near winning it with a 2.7 litre Cooper-Climax. We honour him more as a multiple SA F1 champion.
Point being - I've got a pretty current photo of Big John looking well pleased with himself that I'd like to post here, but I don't have website facilities. Is there a fan here who can advise, or oblige? _________________ If you can't run with the big dogs, keep your slack %&$ on the porch. - Tom Owens. |

Thanks are due to tiggers for putting the pic on the server, and here it is. Looking pretty chipper ...
John is on the left, and on the right is Dave Charlton - they used to have some classic races on-track, and both were multiple SA F1 champions. Something else about John ... people always credit Chapman with bringing sponsorship to F1, with the Lotus 49's appearing in Gold Leaf livery at the second GP of 1968. BUT - at the first 1968 GP (at Kyalami) John's Brabham appeared in full Team Gunston livery, predating Chapman by several weeks.

Sam Tingle's LDS also had Team Gunston livery at that GP, Gunston being South African cigarettes for those who didn't know. _________________ Nivola,
