Chris B:
Just thought I'd pass on my appreciation to Pitpass for running more technically-involved articles like the one with Renault's Chassis Technical Director Bob Bell and Executive Director of Engineering Pat Symonds ("Renault's Pat Symonds and Denis Chevrier on Imola's Unique Challenge", 19/04/2004).
As a race car owner and mechanic - albeit in a very junior formula like Formula Vee - one is constantly trolling the Internet and other sources to pick up little tidbits of information on performance car set up from the pros; often confirmation of theories or validation of ideas. A lot of the information is not applicable, but the basics are required knowledge.
Participants in club-level racing don't have engine or shock dynos, sophisticated data logging ortelemetry, or any of the other whiz-bangs associated with professional level motor sport. Just like the early days of F1, we have to go on driver feedback, observation, and feel.
The discussion on shock absorbers in the aforementioned article was interesting. Shocks are a key component in mechanical grip, and I've been working on maximizing my car's shock effectiveness, both through varying the mounting locations, and working on bump/rebound settings.
Anyway, thanks again for posting this interesting article.
Cheers,
