I'm sure some, if not most of the folks here, watch Jeremy Clarkson's motoring program "Top Gear" on BBC Prime.

That said, does anyone have any idea who Top Gear's "test driver" code named The Stig actually is...? I've never seen his face, nor heard Jeremy mention his name...!

I raise this on this forum, only because he blasted around Top Gear's test track (usually reserved for road going cars) in Fernando Alonso's 2004 F1 Renault.

While I'm sure the likes of Alonso would have done a better job, The Stig handled the F1 car like a pro... Almost like he's raced one before...?

Any one know who he is...?

The "Black Stig" who died a few series ago was Perry McCarthy. I don't know who the current 'white' one is but he/she is much happier going sideways than McCarthy was.

That is very sad news. More so because the series we are currently getting, includes the "Black Stig" who, by the by is (was) a master behind the wheel and an absolute pleasure to watch.

Did Mr McCarthy have any F1 experience.. testing or other, because he knew exactly what he was doing behind the wheel...?

Is the "White Stig" as good... ?

The question of who the Stig is has come up before - can't find the thread, but someone was quite definite that it's Ben Collins.

the most convincing replies I've ever seen to this question have always been Perry McCathy and Ben Collins

OB1, Perry McCarthy, who was the Black Stig is alive and well. It was simply the character of the Black Stig that 'died', to be replaced with the White Stig. (The Black Stig was 'killed' when his Jag was catapulted off an aircraft carrier in the show. It was a stunt of course, and no one was actually killed)

Perry was an F1 driver for Andrea Moda (possibly the worst team ever in F1) in 1992, but failed to qualify at any of the 8 races he attended (more a reflection on the car than the driver), then did some testing for Benneton and Williams, before going back to sports car racing.

The Identity of the White Stig is still the subject of speculation.

The black stig wrote an incredibly funny book, called "Flat Out, Flat Broke" which you should be able to get from any book shop with a decent sports section, or from that book site named after a tribe of South American women. The book is pretty easy to spot, it's red, with a picture of the Stig on the front.

There is a Theory that "The Stig" is more than one Person, one of Renaults test drivers drove the F1 car. Also they will soon be moving to a new airfield in the Cotswolds so old times will be meaningless

I heard that Franck Montagny was the stig on the day they drove the Renault F1 car.

Razz There is a rule somewhere that says something along the lines of "Dont make a new topic when one on the same subject already exists"
