I went to work recently, and someone asked me what I thought of the Australian race and Ferraris dominance, I answered wearily that it wasnt Schumachers fault. Its not Ferraris fault.

I did moan about the qualifying, the useless banal coverage of F1 by Itv in England, the useless build up, James Allen not even mentioning Barry Sheenes widow, etc etc etc..............and my friend just looked at me and said .........'so why the $$$$ did you watch it you $$$$?

I couldnt answer him. I thought about it long and hard, but still couldnt answer it.

Maybe its time that I started doing something constructive with my time on a Sunday afternoon during the summer. Maybe its time I did something, instead of watching someone else do it.

Heaven knows in 20 years time I might regret every second I gave to following this ailing sport. Having seen the way it has died on its feet recently, maybe my 33 years of watching it are finally at an end. Murray Walker always used to say, 'You can always find something exciting and interesting at a Grand Prix'....................Bo!!ox Murray, its exciting because you are there, in the thick of it, being treated like royalty wherever you go. But for the average fan, paying £3.50 for a nasty burger, £3 for a beer and £1.99 for a fizzy coffee, inflated ticket prices, this year, that wont even get you in the centre of the track................Yeah Right.

Much as I think Eddie Jordan is a whinging wide boy, at least he gave the fans something last year, getting the fans that little closer at his factory, fair play to him.

Anyone else think the same, or Have I just swallowed a downer?

Shuntmeister, do you know what I would give for that nasty burger and
fizzy coffee ?? To watch and moan about qualifying, to smell those fumes!!
Anyway back to reality in N.Z. yes, we all do question WHY??
Why? because we have been hooked, like you for decades, but we are
like the gambler -- Maybe NEXT time!! our devotion will be rewarded.
Maybe we will witness that exhilarating demonstration of true racing and
skill where those we most favour excell. If not we will just keep watching,
just in case. We need our fix. God help us.

Agree completely with Sandy. As a die hard McLaren fan you can imagine what 2002, and indeed Aus 2004 was like for me. I don't know why I keep watching. I even remember dramatically announcing to my parents that I wouldn't watch it ever again on several occasions.

But at the next race, there I was in front of the TV watching the race. I couldn't help but think, "maybe we'll win today."
My advice is keep watching - it's sod's law that the first race you miss, it will be an absolute cracker - I thought Nurburgring '99 wouldn't be up to much and so I went to the cinema...

I think I agree with Shuntmeister, why the hell would I want to watch a bunch of cars going round and round if the element of racing is missing, which the sport seems to, at the moment, lack.
The question is what can I do about it, beside complaing a lot Very Happy ?
Since I am powerless to do anything about the sport (unless I am Bill Gates, then maybee I could buy EB off). And since what dictates the spectacle is viewers. The only thing I can do is to stop watching the "race". But, and here is the twist, since I am usually is falling asleep during boring races I am not actually wathcing the races - alas I can watch the exiting races and not watch the boring ones. Very Happy

The solution is to move to the US. There isn't anything else to do on Sunday mornings at 4 AM anyway so you don't have to give up anything else for F1. Laughing

Very true...here the majority of races are done by 9:30 - 10:00 am...leaves the whole day.

But back to your question...maybe you need a break from it, I've taken breaks from other sports and this one too (2002), in the end I've always come back more excited about the possibility. It's all about the possibility of something spectacular happening. I have to agree that watching a parade is depressing, but each race I always hope for something. Sometimes it's disappointing and others it's not...but that's the same with all sports. Good days & bad days.

Secretly right now I'm hoping so hard that the teams (minus Ferrari) have got it together to mount a serious competition. And have decide to tape Malaysia due to the late hour then I can fast forward when needed.

Come on guy's, lighten up a bit! You would'nt be dead for quids, and irrespective of who wins or finishes it's still something to watch. You'll enjoy it more if you just go with flow, take it as it comes and not have your enjoyment of the sport dictated too dependent on who wins or loses.
Either that or barrack for Michael!

I considered not watching F1 anymore when JV was confirmed as not having a ride this year, but I thought I'd watch it anyways just to see. It's not as interesting, for me anyways, but i'll still watch it, but on a reduced level. I used to get up for all the 3 am races if I had the Monday off from Uni, but I wont be getting up for them this year, same with quali and practice. I used to watch quali and practice on the net, but I'm not going to this year. Practice for Malaysia was on at around 5pm here in melb today but I couldnt be bothered watching it, which backed up my hunch that F1 won't be the same for a while. Now I'm only talking from my own perspective here and my feelings after watching JV's untimely exit from the sport. No driver is bigger than the sport, but for a while yet, it won't be the same without JV. I tried being neutral for the aust gp, but it just didnt feel right. I still love F1, but not as much, hopefully it'll change though.

shaun.

Speaking of Villeneuve, there is a lot of talk of him going to Champ car on the CART websites. Dear Mother of God! Never gonna happen, wish it would, but it won't. Sigh..............................

F1 is a boring as you make it. I have devised a cunning plan in where every time MS lead changes by more than a second either way, I get to punch a life-size Bernie. Maybe this could be incorporated into the ITV coverage where President Scwarzeneger punches the real deal. I'd tune in every week...
