I don't think there is any "best" because what people want varies.
EA Sports F1-C is the most realistic to set up and drive. But how many people really care about that? And even less can know that from personal experience. But the realistic physics is why the professional world championship uses it.
I personally prefer the sounds of the GPn series and some of the graphics are better. The Physics are not as realistic for an F1 car but are probably more fun to drive.
And of course Grand Prix Legends is ...uh.... a legend _________________ Those who forget they're passed are doomed to repeat it. |

GPL is a great game, but coming from a blast around Monza on F12003/04, it takes about 3 weeks to get used to braking for Parabolica halfway down the straight!
I usually brake just before I hit the gravel and swing it round! |

I would agree on the Geoff Grammond series. Up to GP3 we could edit tracks and by the time GP4 came out, i must have had a few hundred tracks installed. The power to change physics / drivers / liveries and tracks gave this game serious lasting power.
Pity GP4 didn't have the same facilities to make tracks. It was still great to play and I am sad to see that GP5 etc doesn't look likely. _________________ Dan. |

GPL for a historic view of F1...F1C for a current view.
GPL, like the manual says, is a look at Formula 1 before aero and downforce became such household words. It has some shortcomings (tire temperature/wear probably the biggest) but will always hold a special place on my HD. If I had to clear my PC of every sim but one, GPL would probably remain, although the modded version of NASCAR Racing 2003 with the Trans Am style physics would give it a run.
F1C (F1 Challenge) is very fun, and very frustrating...setups are the key to going fast in it (as in GPL and any racing sim). F1C has an open style structure, which allows for modders to attempt to recreate older eras of F1 racing. I myself am waiting anxiously for the Turbo Era mod to be finalized and released.
GP4 is much prettier and better sounding than F1C but it has a sort of canned feel to it. F1C is more challenging IMO. If Crammond had made GP4 as add-on friendly as GP3, it probably would have grown it's fanbase a bit.
It all comes down to personal preference in sims I guess...the F1C vs GP4 debate rages daily at most racing sim sites. |

Re: GP4...I've heard it's out on XBOX, anyone know if this is true???
Also, anyone got any recommendations for racing games for XBOX, I've looked at Outrun 2, Burnout 3, Project Gotham 3 and the soon to be released Forza Motorsport, can anyone help?? |

FYI, there's a 1975 mod in progress for F1 99-02 out..."demo" released.
Currently, it models the Brabham BT44 in the Martini livery (one of my all time favorites), the Surtees TS16, the Shadow DN5 and DN7 (V8 and V12 models) and the Lotus 72E of 1975. It's still a WIP and takes some changes in the player's line of thought concerning setups versus the modern F1 gaming world, but it is a lot of fun when you get it right.
It's the closest thing to game 4 wheel drifting I've tried since GPL came out. And it will only get better. |

I'm an avid participant of F1C 99-02 with all the current mods for the 2004 season.
I now only ever race witgh low traction control or no aids at all and there is some incredibly close and quick racing. The online racing is superb!
That would get my vote. _________________ Carpe Diem |

basically every part of GP4 with the exception of the tracks is customizable. There is a good community for it despite its age and although i havent tried the ea sims i would highly recommend gp4.
My game has the 2004 cars, tv displays (driver names/times), helmets, pit crews, 3d wheel add on, new realistic sounds, new realistic physics. The works basically, it is great fun. |

For a good manager game, why not F1CM (see www.f1cm.co.uk), it is set to be the best game in the world, ever. _________________ Alex |

| Been following it since 2003, Alex. Any idea when it'll be out 'cause it's in Alpha 3 testing now supposedly. I had heard Christmas 2004, obviously now. |

gp4. Though there are some disappointments:
There is no safety car, no ‘stop and go’ penalties (no penalties for causing accident at all), you are always able to get out of gravel. Also, sometimes weather changes and track conditions don't match each other. _________________ Nothing exists but that opinion. |
