Austria 02-MS was very happy right after finish and cheered wildly(waved) only when he heard the crowd booing him he put on his PR-face and tried to look sad.

Anyone mention the prerace press conference for Suzuka, 2000? That was just an all-around classic F1 weekend! (Anyone miss Mika, yet? Bring him back!) The Title was on the line. Last race of the season. Mika'd just nipped Michael for pole. (Wasn't it, like, .001?) While they talked, spirits were high. Mika said he would be braking five meters later for corners. Michael said that he, then, would brake ten meters late. Mika - truly one of the funniest men in F1, I don't care what anyone says - quipped, "See you in the gravel."

Boy-howdy, do I ever miss Mika!

And who among us who saw that race doubts that they were braking very, very late, indeed? What an outstanding race! Very Happy

Sorry. Yes. Michael had pole. When you wrote that - I recalled Mika looking over at him, just before the start. Mika outqualified Michael at Spa. But... in Japan, I think the margin was infinitisimal. Smaller than a hundreth. Between .001 and .006. No greater than .006...

I have to disagree on that, someone getting run over is never funny.

Zandvoort 1966
Some of the press had been referring to 40 year old Jack Brabham as the 'Grand Old Man'. So in practice Jack was seen walking down the pit lane bent double with a grey beard and a walking stick.
He won the Grand Prix and went on to take his third World Championship.

I've read of the incident in several places but never seen a photo. There is a drawing in the book of Michael Turner's Formula 1 pictures with text by Nigel Roebuck but I have no means to scan it or post it.

I think you should qualify that. Someone getting run over is usually not funny. Sometimes, it is enormously so. I in fact still find my old death-defying motorcycle crash pretty amusing. (I wasn't awake to enjoy it, initially.) A friend of mine nearly lost a leg in a motorcycle crash (he unfortunately being very much awake for the proceedings), and he is more than capable of having a healthy laugh about it.

All a matter of attitude.

My Italian friend calls the man di Montezemolo. And he knows his racing. Perhaps this was something the writer faked, being silly? (Hey, don't doubt the possibility of that. The New York Times over here has been known for its make-believe foisted as journalism.) Maybe when I see the guy, I'll ask him. Wink

McLaren used to paint the floor of their pit/paddock garage with epoxy paint to keep dust etc under control (for all I know they still do). On one occasion they wheeled the cars in before the paint was dry, The next morning the cars were stuck to the floor. They tried to free a car by jacking it up - and broke the suspension!
