Of the most recent it's got to be Mika Hakkinen.
Historically I loved watching Senna, Prost and Giles. Giles being on video, as I'm too young. |

I was recently looking at some old photos of the 1970 BOAC 1000 at Brands Hatch.
Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert, both good F1 drivers, were absolute stars in the the Porsche 917s.
I will remember Pedro in the BRM 153 at Spa, 1970 and Jo in the Rob Walker Lotus 49 at Brands in (?)68, but for both it will be their drives in the 917s that stick in my mind. |

Regular F1 telecasts didn't appear in Australia until 1981 (IIRC) so I didn't get to see enough of Gilles - something that I truly regret.
The man I did see a lot of, though, was Rosberg. Keke Rosberg. The smoking, drinking, candid, irreverent and bloody spectacular world champion of 1982.
When Keke was fast, he looked fast. Wheels on the grass, the car twitching in mid-corner, so obviously driving the car to its limits. If you want to see something special, track down the 1985 South African GP and watch his unsuccessful chase of Mansell in the closing laps.
More highlights in my memory:
Monaco 1983 when he started on slicks in the rain and slaughtered everyone. For that matter, the whole first half of 1983 was special as he ran in the top two in the championship despite the handicap of a seriously underpowered car.
Dallas 1984 on a crumbling track with champions in the wall everywhere. Keke never put a wheel wrong as he won with ease.
Austria 1982 and his chase of de Angelis, finishing with the cars thousandths of seconds apart.
Adelaide 1985 with Keke controlling the race as Senna panicked behind him.
Adelaide 1986. His last race. Keke sprinted off into the distance only to suffer a puncture.
What's more, the man was as brilliant out of the car as in it:
The "I Love Turbos" sign on his driving suit as he worked wonders with the normally aspirated Williams.
"The car is s*&!, thank you very much."
"The engine's only been lightly revised, it's still got six cylinders."
"I'm not allowed to talk about the engine, but if it was I'd say it's much more powerful but the power still comes in with to much of a bang."
Describing the evil, flexing Williams-Honda FW09 as the worst car he'd ever driven, the week before he won with it in Dallas.
The boy Nico looks like he's going to be good, but he'll never be Keke. _________________ When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. - HST |

I was sat in the Woodcote Grandstand for practice for the 1985 British G.P. and so saw Rosberg on that lap. A damp track, a miserable day, a deflating tyre (as we later heard) and Keke on fire!
We could not afford to see the race, only practice, but it is still a G.P. that I remember. _________________ Yes, I Know that I'm a BOF. Someone please tell me why I still watch. |

I can't say I miss Mika the most anymore. Since the checkered flag fell last October in Brazil, that title now belongs to my idol, Michael Schumacher. _________________ The secret of success is to do common things uncommonly well. |

I don't YET miss MS.
I expect I will before the end of the season, but even as an admirer of him, I don't have the fond memories, covered in the golden glow which only comes with half remembered reminiscences that I get from drivers from the 50's, 60's and 70's. (Just a couple from the 80's and I can remember most of the 90's still.) _________________ Yes, I Know that I'm a BOF. Someone please tell me why I still watch. |

Better not asking him...
...or he may even try to compose a song for him!
btw ITV viewers are still lucky not suffering the music as we do in Tele5. Last year they put the famous El Nano song by Melendi, dedicated to Magic Alonso, on almost every race. This year is the new song from El Sueño de Morfeo, the group of Raquel, Fernando's girlfriend/wife/couple/whatever... several times during ALL races!
Just image what would happen on ITV broadcasting if anyone makes a song about Magic Lewis. _________________ [slowly trying to return] |

Yeah, someone from another forum said the same thing... one Spanish friend of mine is complaning that Alonso's everywhere. I guess in the UK they'd probably have a song soon too... I wouldn't be surprised |

For me; it has to be my Johnny Herbert. Been hopelessly devoted to Johnny Herbert for a blinking long time and i miss him in F1.
I also miss JV. _________________ I am sick of your excuses, Commander Khashoggi. And I'm also sick of you. With your weary, sneery, posey, schmosey, look at me, I'm wearing sunglasses indoors crap! |
