The unluckiest driver

When I think of unlucky drivers, I always think of Jonny Herbert. He always seemed to be chatting to Louise Goodman after retiring. And then he crashed and got injured in his last race. Still, I guess he is not quite so unlucky at Le Mans.

Yeah, when someone says "unlucky" and "driver," I also think Herbert. Maybe not the most unlucky ever... but then, if you opened the dictionary to the word and found his picture, you wouldn't be too, too shocked.

While death is pretty much the ultimate misfortune, I do have to agree that this is sometimes a case where it is true, we make our own luck, and then again, a racing death can be pure bad luck. Richard Seaman, just after his death and before he slipped into the hereafter stated flatly that he was going to fast, trying to show himself to be every bit the Regenmeister his teammate Rudi Caracciola was. Not bad luck so much as bad judgement (from a very great driver) and driver-error. Tom Pryce was killed by a flying fire extinguisher, in an instance of terrible bad luck.

If someone's "picture is in the dictionary" in relation to a particular word, they define that word, and vice-versa. Johnny Herbert had soem terrible F1 luck. But he was fortunate in that misfortune did not block him from a few grand prix wins. Some unlucky drivers didn't even get that much.

Bet lots of drivers that never achieved what they thought they would feel pretty unlucky. Martin Brundle, for instance. Broke both his legs and got beaten by Michael to that win in Belgium. Bet he thought it should have been his! Smile

It surprises me, how many mentions Alesi to be the unluckiest driver. After all, he reached a decent pinnacle of his career with an F1 GP win. He would had needed clearly the best car in the field to win a championship because the gap between good and a bad day was too big. I think. And he was also allowed to drive a competitive cars a lot during his career. Though they were not entirely the best in the field, but very good ones still.
After all, I do not think, Alesi never quite was a worth of the championship though he was quite good.
