Gurmit's View: There's spin and then there's spin

23/10/2012

While some cite Edward Bernays as the first of the spin doctors - a term first coined in the 1980s in the aftermath of the televised debate between presidential candidates Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale - others point to the infamous Josef Goebbels.

There have been many since, both in reality and fiction. Who can ever forget Comical Ali or the infamous Alastair Campbell or Jo Moore - who famously used the phrase 'it's now a very good day to get out anything we want to bury' in the wake of the 9/11 atrocities.

Then there's Mike Flaherty in the American sitcom Spin City, Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, Conrad Brean in Wag the Dog and Nick Naylor in Thank You for Smoking.

However, in Korea spin was taken to a whole new level by Martin Whitmarsh. Indeed, the McLaren team boss got himself in such a twist he came close to upstaging PSY's Gangham Style.
