Special tribute for racing legend Clark

Formula One legend Jim Clark is to be paid a unique tribute later this year, on the 50th anniversary of his first motorsport event.

BriSCA, the British Stock Car Association is to pay tribute to the legendary Scot, who was killed in a Formula 2 race at Hockenheim in April 1968, at Crimond Raceway, near Peterhead.

The event comes fifty years after Clark competed in an Aberdeen and District Motor Club meeting at the nearby Crimond airfield circuit, when Clark drove his friend, Ian Scott Watson's, DKW Sonderklasse.

"The weekend will honour one of motorsport's true greats and promote motorsport in Scotland," said promoter Scott Keith, announcing the event. "It will be a big weekend for BriSCA because Cowdenbeath will be running their world qualifier the night before ours so there should be a good crowd of F2 drivers from all over Britain attending."

The tribute, to be held on 17-18 June, will see a vast range of machinery perform demonstration runs, in an attempt not merely to honour a great racing driver but to promote Scottish motorsport, with the Scottish Motor Racing Club providing a number of single-seaters and karts.

"It is a great opportunity to showcase motorsport up north," added Scott. "They've got Goodwood in the south but no major event up here to show people what they could be getting involved with.

"Ian Scott Watson will be coming along as guest of honour," he revealed, "and we are hoping to get some old Jim Clark machinery there too.

"Our goal would be to pit a BriSCA F1 car against an F1 car on the track."

Memo to Formula One; which has always shown scant regard for its history and tradition.

This event falls on the weekend between the British and Canadian Grands Prix, surely Formula One can help out in some way and help pay tribute to one of its greatest ever champions.
