BIOGRAPHY

Starting out in Karts, aged eleven, in 2008 Alex made the move up to the KF2 category, finishing sixth in the Super 1 National KF2 Championship a year later.

2009 also saw him make the switch to single-seaters, contesting the Michelin Formula Renault UK Winter Cup with Fortec Motorsport.

A year later, still with Fortec, saw Alex win the Michelin Formula Renault Winter Cup though he could only manage tenth overall in the Michelin Formula Renault UK series. That said, he did win the Graduate Cup by scoring his first podium at the final race of the season at Brands Hatch.

2011 saw him contest and win the Certina Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship with Fortec, taking 12 wins from 20 races, whilst also contesting the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand with Giles Motorsport, in which he finished 9th overall. His achievement in the Certina Formula Renault 2.0 UK Championship subsequently saw Alex named British Club Driver of the Year.

For 2012 he made the move up to F3 with Fortec. Finishing the series fourth overall - with just one win - Alex also found time to contest rounds of the European F3 Open Winter Series and Formula 3 Euro Series, not to mention the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 where he finished seventh and Macau where he finished third.

Over the winter of 2012/2013, Alex returned to New Zealand to contest the Toyota Racing Series, this time with M2 Competition. Finishing runner-up, he returned to Europe to contest the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with Prema Powerteam.

He finished third overall in the championship and highest placed rookie, with 3 wins, 14 podiums and 5 pole positions; including triple pole position at his home round at Brands Hatch.

In addition to finishing runner-up in the RTL GP Masters of F3 at Zandvoort, Alex returned to Macau for the Star River Windsor Arch Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix with Theodore Racing by Prema.

Theodore Racing had last appeared at the Grand Prix in 1992 and was celebrating thirty years since it had won the event with Ayrton Senna. Alex won the qualification race to give him pole position for the main race and went on to dominate from start to finish, thereby becoming the first Briton to win since 2007.

2014 saw Alex, now a member of the Red Bull Junior Team programme, make the move up to GP3 with Carlin Motorsport. Wins at the season-opener in Barcelona, the Red Bull Ring and Spa, together with eight other podium finishes, saw the youngster take the title with a record points margin, the first Briton to win the series.

Having won the GP3 title, Alex was handed a day of testing with the ART Grand Prix GP2 team, which was subsequently followed by a day with Carlin.

More importantly however, Alex finally made the move up to F1, testing with Lotus at the season ending test in Abu Dhabi. Although he only had limited running in the Enstone car - having to share it with Esteban Ocon - the Briton completed 52 laps and was 0.8s quicker than the highly-rated Frenchman.

In January 2015 it was announced that in addition to contesting the GP2 Series with DAMS, Alex was the new development driver for the improving Williams F1 team, though this meant severing his ties with Red Bull.

Wins in Spain (Sprint) and Hungary (Feature), along with podium finishes in Austria and Bahrain saw Alex finish the season sixth overall, two spots ahead, but with the same points as teammate Pierre Gasly.

The November 2015 recruitment of Canadian teenager Lance Stroll to Williams Young Driver Development Programme suggested that, should he be retained by the Grove outfit in 2016, Alex would have some competition at Williams.

In late February, following the conclusion of the opening pre-season F1 test, Williams confirmed that Alex would be continuing as the Development Driver alongside his GP2 commitments with DAMS.
