Aston Martin reacts to Pirelli's investigation

NEWS STORY
16/06/2021

Like Pirelli and Red Bull, Aston Martin adopts the Bart Simpson 'It wasn't me' mantra following Baku tyre failures.

It wasn't debris, it certainly wasn't a fault in the tyres, nor was it naughtiness involving the teams, as Aston Martin joins Red Bull and Pirelli in proclaiming the tyre failure in Baku to be a complete mystery.

"Following an investigation alongside Pirelli, Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team can provide a statement on the tyre issue that ended Lance Stroll's Azerbaijan Grand Prix," said the Silverstone-based outfit this morning.

"Lance had started the Grand Prix in 19th on the hard tyre in an alternate strategy that helped him climb the order and into points contention," the team continued.

"On Lap 29, Lance was running comfortably inside the Top 10, when on the long run to Turn One, he suffered a technical issue that led to him making contact with the wall.

"The Canadian would retire from the Grand Prix in a dramatic race in which team-mate Sebastian Vettel scored Aston Martin's first podium in World Championship history.

"Having reviewed the incident since the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the team can provide a statement: "Following the tyre issue on Lance Stroll’s car on lap 29 of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, we have worked with the FIA and Pirelli during their investigation.

"We can confirm there was no car fault that caused the tyre to fail.

"The team has always operated its tyres within the Pirelli prescribed parameters and will continue to do so."

Our guess, is it was Colonel Mustard in the motorhome with the dodgy tyre blankets and valve tool.

"They do say “it wasn’t the car”

They do say “we did everything right as far as the tests can tell” (smells like a certain rear wing to me)

They don’t say “it wasn’t our teams’ use of the tyres”

The change in the FIA guidance hints as to why they don’t say this."

"@VC10...If you read the new rules/regs concerning tyres that the FIA are introducing you will see where they, the FIA, consider their tests as being insufficient to what happens currently."

"Kenji - I would have thought the FIA had access to all the car data including tyre pressures. They use team data when investigating accidents and driver misdemeanours so I don't see this being any different. "

"Why are the FIA bothering other than to be seen to be concerned? Pirelli investigated themselves, likewise Red Bull and Aston Martin. To expect any one [ possibly ] guilty party admitting that they messed with the tyres is to silly for words. Without an independent source to investigate it's like a an orchard in a drought...fruitless."
