F1 set to adopt Halo device for 2017

NEWS STORY

It is understood that the Technical Regulations Working Group has agreed on the Halo device as the preferred option for driver head protection scheduled to be introduced next season.

Though Red Bull's aeroscreen has proved popular within sections of the paddock, and with fans, it was deemed that not enough research has been carried out, though it is possible that it could be introduced in 2018.

With a deadline set for July 1, the Halo device, a version of which was run by Ferrari in pre-season testing, will undergo crash-testing late next month before the working group meets at Silverstone over the British Grand Prix weekend at which time the decision to introduce the device next season is ratified.

The need for a form of driver head protection was highlighted during Thursday's running, when Jenson Button was lucky not to be hit by a metal inspection cover which was lifted by Nico Rosberg's Mercedes. The metal cover badly damaged the front wing and suspension on the Briton's McLaren.
