Raikkonen escapes punishment

Race stewards have opted to take no further action against Kimi Raikkonen following his crash during today's Monaco GP.

The Finn made an unforced error at the hairpin ten laps into the race, and after reversing to free himself from the barriers tried to continue.

However, his front wing, which had become dislodged in the original accident was now beneath his front wings and made steering the car nigh impossible, and as the Ferrari driver wrestled with the SF16-H he caused problems for other drivers, most notably Felipe Massa and Romain Grosjean, who for a time was stuck behind and unable to move.

The Finn continued through the tunnel but eventually parked at the Nouveaux Chicane (T10) after being instructed to do so by his team. He was subsequently summoned by the stewards.

Charged with "proceeding around the track from Turn 6 with the front wing of the car loose and stuck under the left front wheel, resulting in debris being left on the circuit prior to parking the car at Turn 10" and "with the wing under the front wheel the driver did not have full control of the car", an alleged Breach of Article 12.1.1 h) of the FIA International Sporting Code.

The stewards opted to take no further action because "the driver, in evidence, stated that he thought initially that he could safely proceed to
the pits to replace the nose".

"Radio messages confirm this," they revealed. "The team advised the driver that he needed to stop the car as soon as possible. The driver stated that he wanted to stop the car in a safe place and the first available place was the runoff area at Turn 10."
