Maldonado, Perez and Hulkenberg get penalties

NEWS STORY

Pastor Maldonado and both Force India drivers have been hit with penalties following today's Grand Prix.

The Venezuelan was adjudged not to have stayed above the minimum time set by the FIA ECU when following the safety car, a breach of Article 41.5 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Consequently he received a ten-second time penalty in addition to 3 penalty points, which brings his total for the 12 month period up to 8. Should he accrue a further 4 points within the 12 month period he would automatically incur a one race ban.

Both Force India drivers were handed 10-second time penalties during the race but it was subsequently felt that this was not enough.

Perez, who hit Romain Grosjean as the Frenchman went around the outside of him in T12, was adjudged to have caused the collision, an incident as defined by Article 16.1 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations. He is therefore handed a 2-point penalty, bringing his total for the 12 month period up to 3.

Teammate Hulkenberg who hit Daniil Kvyat after being passed by the Russian and whilst trying to re-take the position, sending the Red Bull driver in to a spin at T2, was also adjudged to have caused the incident, and was also handed a 2 point penalty, his first such penalty in the 12 month period.

"The Hulkenberg-Kvyat crash was a racing incident and did not warrant punishment in my eyes. Isn't the penalty during the race enough? Who is deciding after the fact to just pile more penalties on? If the penalty wasn't enough, you should have given a harsher one during the race."

"I think 4 of those points expire before the next race so he shouldn't be in danger yet..."
