Keep fighting Michael; you remain forever in our thoughts

It is still difficult for Formula One fans to come to terms with what has happened to Michael Schumacher.

His famous leap on the top step of the podium was a familiar sight throughout his career and contemplating the reality of his current situation often doesn't bear thinking about.

A silent vigil took place outside his hospital to mark his 45th birthday weeks after his accident and as he turned one year older last weekend the amount of tributes paid to the German on social media was simply staggering.

Curiously, the first anniversary of his accident passed by with little more than a fleeting reference on the majority of media outlets, a major contrast from just over twelve months ago when seemingly journalists from all four corners of the globe were camped outside his hospital in Grenoble; all hungry for any scraps of information they could devour.

The infrequent, and often ambiguous, nature of the press releases issued by Michael's management have done little to satisfy the craving that the media has for information. After all, the establishment wants to set the agenda and being spoon fed indistinct updates does little to appease the appetite thus creating an environment where facts are hard to come by and consequently speculation is the order of the day.

In the aftermath of his accident we witnessed the nasty side of the press. The thought of a journalist dressing as a priest in order gain access to Michael as he lay fighting for his life was arguably the lowest it has sunk to when reporting on Formula One, with the alleged touting of his medical records coming a close second.

It is not wrong to be curious about the condition of Michael Schumacher. He remains a hugely popular figure - the most searched-for athlete online in 2014 - but rumours and gossip help nobody. Articles depicting the grave situation of the seven-time world champion have often been accompanied by photographs of the German skiing during his time at Ferrari, which seems distasteful at best and disrespectful at worst. The stance taken by this website of not using portraits of Michael altogether feels appropriate.

Some fans have felt alienated by the lack of updates given during the process as they have naturally grown attached to Michael and have been by his side during the highs and lows of his career. Combined with his status as a legend in the sport he remains a newsworthy figure. Although others believe that the family's right to privacy - which Michael has fiercely defended throughout his career - is more important. Neither camp will be kept happy, but they are both united in their unwavering hope that his current predicament will improve.

Michael was a divisive figure during his career in Formula One but now is not the time to revisit the same old controversial moments that are in the past; where they should remain. The overwhelming support shown by people across the world is of great strength to his family. If only Michael knew just how loved he is.

He may be out of sight, but he is forever in our thoughts.
