Hulkenberg confident ahead of 2014

Nico Hulkenberg says he is confident Force India will be able to adapt well to the technical changes coming to Formula One in 2014. The German driver returns to Force India following a one-year spell with Sauber, agreeing a new multi-year deal with the Silverstone-based team in December, following a season in which the Swiss outfit failed to live up to the hype that convinced a good number of Betfair customers to back them for a strong season.

While Hulkenberg had been linked with a move to Lotus for 2014, the team's financial problems played a key role in the decision to sign the heavily-backed Pastor Maldonado rather than the German, although the Betfair odds suggest that Hulkenberg would have brought more to the team in terms of results.

Force India's co-owner Vijay Mallya, who had been in contact with Hulkenberg since the beginning of last season, wasted little time in making sure he secured the German's services when Lotus made its decision.

Hulkenberg rejoins as Formula 1 undergoes a technical transformation, with next year's cars powered by 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged engines which also feature powerful energy recovery systems, and Force India's continued relationship with Mercedes prompting many to tip the team as one of next season's surprise packages with Betfair.com.

"It's really tough to know," said Hulkenberg, "all winter we're going to be answering these questions. We're entering a new era in Formula 1 and therefore it's impossible to tell. What we must make sure now is that we do our homework and that we work really hard on our project, on our car, and that's all we can do to be competitive next year."

"I'm confident we can have a good package. We'll see next year. We have a Mercedes package which I think is a good benefit," he added.
